Bellarmine, Robert

Bellarmine, Robert
(1542–1621)
   Archbishop, Saint and Theologian.
Bellarmine was a native of Tuscany, Italy. Having joined the Jesuit Order in 1560, he taught theology at the University of Louvain from 1570 and he became a professor at the Collegium Romanum in 1576. In 1597 he was chosen to be personal theologian to the Pope; he became a Cardinal in 1599 and he was Archbishop of Capua between 1602 and 1605. He is remembered for his vigorous defence of Roman Catholicism against the Protestants, his most famous work being Disputationes de Controversiis Christianae Fidei adversus huius Temporis Haereticos. His views were moderate. He took an informed and friendly interest in the work of galileo and he argued for less direct papal interference in secular matters. Because of this, his true worth was not immediately recognised by the Church establishment and he was not canonised until 1930. The following year he was named a Doctor of the Church.
